Mike Huckabee, the US Ambassador to Israel, delivered the commencement address at Yeshiva University in New York City on Thursday, where he was awarded the Presidential Medallion.

President Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman opened the ceremony and invited Huckabee to the stage. Dr. Berman presented Huckabee with the Presidential Medallion, the university’s highest honor for global leadership.

In his address, Dr. Berman praised Huckabee for his dedication to the Jewish people and the state of Israel

He particularly highlighted Huckabee’s efforts following the events of October 7, noting his work to help free Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity.

“Ambassador Huckabee, your work helped bring them home, and we are eternally grateful,” said Dr. Berman.

As he presented the award, he added, “We place this visual symbol of our profound admiration and gratitude. May the Lord bless you and protect you, may He continue to strengthen your voice as the moral voice and conscience of our generation.”

Huckabee addresses graduates

In his keynote address to the graduating class, Huckabee urged graduates to see their diplomas as a call to serve.

“Yeshiva University stands as a remarkable example of what higher education can be at its very best,” he said.

“In a time of confusion and division, this institution continues to produce graduates whose education is both broad and rigorous, anchored in moral clarity and a commitment to eternal values. The students leaving here today are ready to bring wisdom, integrity, and devotion into every arena they enter.”

In closing his address, Huckabee encouraged students in their Jewish identity, saying, “Never be afraid to be who you are.”

“Live with a great sense of duty to God and duty to His law and duty to every single person who lived in order for you to be here today, and may God richly bless your lives and your future.”

The highlight of the ceremony was a musical performance by Joey Newcomb, and, in a surprise moment, Huckabee strapped on a bass guitar and joined the band as students, faculty, alumni, and guests danced together across the arena floor.
