The European Society of Cardiology Congress that kicks off Friday in Munich will be a consequential meeting for Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, as the outlook wavers for its two ATTR-CM drugs because of a competing drug’s surprising failure in the same heart disease.

Cardiologists and investors attending the ESC meeting will learn new details from AstraZeneca and Ionis Pharmaceuticals about why their rival drug, eplontersen, failed to significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular deaths or recurrent events compared to a placebo.
