Iran’s Supreme National Security Council head Mohsen Rezaee tied the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to regional peace in an interview broadcast by Lebanon’s Al Manar TV on Thursday.
“The issue of the Strait of Hormuz is related to ending the wars in the entire region, and in particular in Lebanon and Gaza,” he declared.
“If the Americans want to open the Strait of Hormuz, they must commit to this condition. Mediators have asked Iran to present its conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
Iran is preparing a list of conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz after mediators asked Tehran to set them out, said Rezaei, adding that ending the regional war was among them.
Iran, Oman yet to agree on Hormuz agreement, source says
Rezaei said Iran had agreed with Oman on a shipping corridor through the strait, with parts of the route in Omani waters and parts in Iranian waters. Ships would use a designated central channel if the US met Iran’s conditions, he said.
On Wednesday, a senior source said Iran and Oman were still working on details of an agreement on the waterway after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the two countries had agreed on how to share control of the strait and its revenues.
A Guards spokesperson said Iran would not allow the strait to reopen unless Washington lifted what Tehran describes as a blockade of Iranian ports while also paying compensation and removing sanctions.
Rezaee also said reports about a potential plot to assassinate US President Donald Trump’s youngest son are a lie in the interview.
