STAT+: Nonprofit health system raked in $1.1 billion this year from stake in medical billing firm

For Bon Secours Mercy Health, Ensemble Health Partners is the gift that keeps on giving. 

Seven years after the nonprofit health system sold stakes in its in-house billing and collections company to private equity investors, it still rakes in eye-popping amounts of cash from its minority position, with payments topping $1 billion so far this year.  

About two weeks ago, the Cincinnati, Ohio-based system said it got a hefty $671 million payment from Ensemble Health Partners when the company signed a new private equity sponsor. That’s on top of a $427 million distribution Bon Secours Mercy recorded in February. Both payments were reported on the nonprofit system’s financial report for the second quarter, which ended June 30.
