This weekend, dumpling devotees have yet another reason to head to Jackson Heights, Queens. The 14th annual Momo Crawl, NYC’s largest Himalayan food and cultural festival, is happening on Sunday, September 13. The event will showcase the Himalayan favorite snack as well as live music and dance performances. Purchase a passport and enjoy dumplings from over 30 local vendors for one dollar each.
The event, now in its 14th year, is a collaborative effort between founder Jeff Orlick and grassroots organization Students for a Free Tibet. The blocked-off Diversity Plaza (37th Road between 73rd and 74th Streets) in Jackson Heights will have a main stage with performances all day as a backdrop for sampling Tibetan, Nepalese, and South Asian culinary traditions. All proceeds from the event support the work of Students for a Free Tibet.
On the menu are momos from local restaurants, including Amdo Kitchen, Gangri Karpo, Potala Fresh Food, Mom’s Momo, and many more. Along with a passport (which can be purchased here) visitors get an official ballot to vote for their favorite among the vendors. The winner takes the Momo Championship Belt for the year.
This year, the community behind Momo Crawl plans to direct a significant portion of proceeds to the Nepali government’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund. They’ve also established a GoFundMe, which will be active until Sunday’s event.
Momo Crawl starts at noon on Sunday, September 13 (voting closes at 4:30 pm). Momo Crawl passports are $15 (the first 100 buyers get a free Tibetan scarf). More information can be found here.
