The Justice Department has issued subpoenas to relatives of Rep. Ilhan Omar as part of a criminal investigation that includes a review of her immigration history, Bloomberg reported Tuesday evening, citing a person familiar with the matter.
The demands follow Monday’s court-authorized search of the Minnesota Democrat’s Washington, D.C., home. Investigators are now seeking information from relatives, although Bloomberg’s available report did not identify the recipients or specify what information the subpoenas requested.
Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted the home search. The Justice Department confirmed that agents executed a judicially authorized warrant connected to an ongoing federal criminal investigation, but provided few public details.
Reuters separately reported that part of the inquiry concerns alleged immigration fraud involving paperwork Omar’s late father completed when she was a child. That account also cited a person familiar with the investigation.
Omar denies wrongdoing. Her office said she had done nothing wrong and condemned the search as an abuse of power. The congresswoman accused the Trump administration of political intimidation and said she would not be silenced.
The investigation is unfolding weeks before November’s midterm elections, when Omar is seeking reelection. Democratic leaders questioned the timing of the search. NPR reported that senior Justice Department officials reviewed and approved the operation beforehand.
The subpoenas mark another evidence-gathering step in the inquiry. The public reporting has not disclosed the evidence behind the demands or established criminal wrongdoing by Omar or her relatives.
