At least 30 people were reported killed in Wednesday’s collision between two high-speed trains in Urda, Spain, as Castilla-La Mancha regional president Emiliano García-Page put the number of injured at about 80 and warned that more victims could be found.

The latest toll and García-Page’s remarks to reporters at the emergency command post appear in the linked account of his onsite briefing. The figures remain provisional. García-Page said crews had not yet been able to reach all parts of the wrecked carriages.

Medical post and emergency plan activated

The regional government’s 112 emergency service confirmed that the collision involved two high-speed trains at Urda station in Toledo province. The government activated its PLATECAM territorial emergency plan at 9:15 a.m. local time.

Police, firefighters, civil-protection volunteers and regional health-service personnel were dispatched. The 112 statement said an advanced medical post was being set up to triage those affected, provide initial treatment and arrange hospital transfers. Urda’s sports hall was also being prepared to receive people affected by the crash.

García-Page said the immediate priority was caring for victims and their families. He declined to identify a cause before specialists had completed their work.

The 112 emergency-plan statement does not give a casualty toll. The death and injury figures above come from the separately linked report of the regional president’s onsite briefing.
