The U.S. goods trade deficit widened to $134.9 billion in September, up $2.8 billion from August, the Census Bureau reported Wednesday in its advance economic indicators release.
The deficit increased from $132.1 billion in August, a rise of about 2.1%. Goods exports reached $209.2 billion, up $5.3 billion from the previous month, while goods imports rose $8.1 billion to $344.1 billion, according to the Census release.
The figures cover trade in goods, not the broader goods-and-services balance. They are advance estimates and can be revised.
Wholesale and retail inventories rise
Wholesale inventories were estimated at $1,011.5 billion at the end of September, up 0.6% from August and 7.4% from a year earlier. The bureau left August’s monthly increase unchanged at 0.5%.
Retail inventories reached $885.3 billion, up 0.3% from August and 4.8% from September 2025. August’s monthly increase was revised to 0.3% from the preliminary estimate of 0.2%.
The inventory figures are adjusted for seasonal variations and trading-day differences, but not for changes in prices. The report was released October 28 and covers September activity.
