The Milwaukee Brewers won the first World Series championship in franchise history Wednesday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Milwaukee closed out the best-of-seven series four games to one. MLB’s official game data showed the game as final, with the Brewers recording eight hits to Tampa Bay’s four.
Cooper Pratt helped put Milwaukee ahead in the second inning with an RBI single that scored Brice Turang. David Hamilton added an RBI single in the fifth, bringing Pratt home and extending the lead to 2-0.
The Brewers scored twice more in the sixth. William Contreras doubled home Christian Yelich, then scored on Pratt’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. MLB’s official Game 5 highlights documented all four Milwaukee scoring plays.
Tampa Bay scored in the ninth when Chandler Simpson doubled home Liam Hicks. The Rays finished with one run, while Milwaukee’s four-run lead through eight innings proved enough to clinch the championship.
Jacob Misiorowski was credited with the win and Drew Rasmussen with the loss, according to MLB’s official game record.
The Brewers entered Wednesday with a 3-1 series lead and a chance to win their first title, as MLB noted in its Game 5 preview. Wednesday’s victory ended the series in Florida without a return to Milwaukee.
