Japan’s prime minister ordered officials to check the safety of aircraft and vessels and prepare for contingencies Thursday after a suspected ballistic missile launch by North Korea, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The official instructions, issued at 12:38 p.m. Japan time on October 29, called for maximum effort to gather and analyze information and to keep the public informed promptly. That was 11:38 p.m. Wednesday in New York.

The prime minister directed officials to ensure the safety of aircraft, vessels and other assets and to take all possible precautionary measures, including readiness for contingencies.

The statement described the event as a suspected ballistic missile launch. It did not specify the number of projectiles, their flight paths or where they landed, and did not provide a damage assessment.
