Updated November 2 at 8:50 p.m. EST with a Monday statement from Murphy’s office reported by Newsweek.

Sen. Chris Murphy remained hospitalized and continued to respond well to treatment Monday following his weekend stroke, his office told Newsweek. The report did not provide a discharge date or a timetable for resuming his Senate duties.

Sen. Chris Murphy, the Connecticut Democrat, is awake and alert after a stroke, his chief of staff said Sunday, November 1. Allison Herwitt said he is responding well to treatment at Johns Hopkins and that his office is optimistic he will make a full recovery.

Murphy began feeling numbness in his arm Saturday afternoon while attending his son’s hockey game, Herwitt said in a statement. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined that he had experienced a stroke.

He was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring. Herwitt said doctors are encouraged by his progress. The statement did not provide a timetable for his discharge or return to work.

The hospitalization comes days before the midterm elections. Murphy is not on the ballot this year and had been traveling to support Democratic candidates. He had been scheduled to campaign in New Hampshire on Sunday.
