President Donald Trump said Sunday that the conflict with Iran would end “very soon, one way or the other,” keeping both a negotiated agreement and further American action on the table as the United States heads into Tuesday’s midterm elections.
“We’ve had such a victory and we’ll put it away very soon, one way or the other. Either they’ll make a deal or we’ll just end it,” Trump said, according to Israel National News. He added that it could end “maybe the easy way.” The Times of Israel reported that he made the remarks to the Right Side Broadcasting Network.
The comments offered no specific deadline, agreement terms or announcement that a new military operation had begun. Trump’s prediction of a quick end comes as Washington weighs diplomacy against renewed force, with the consequences for shipping and energy markets still unresolved.
Trump also confirmed Sunday that he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the war, according to the White House traveling press pool. The confirmation came amid uncertainty over the objectives and timing of a possible joint operation.
The president’s remarks add a fresh public statement to a standoff that has already brought Iranian threats of wider retaliation and concern about energy infrastructure. They do not, on their own, establish that either side has changed its negotiating position or that the conflict is ending.
