J.P. Morgan Private Bank has opened a dedicated wealth-management branch in Dubai International Financial Centre, adding a locally regulated platform for clients in the UAE and the wider Middle East.
The new branch is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority, according to a DIFC announcement Monday. The National reported that the opening expands the bank’s private-banking offerings in the region.
The branch does not mark JPMorgan’s first presence in the UAE. The firm has a relationship with the country spanning more than five decades and has used DIFC as a regional corporate and investment banking base for 20 years, the announcement said.
Private-banking team more than tripled
J.P. Morgan Private Bank more than tripled its Dubai-based team during the 12 months before the authorisation, according to DIFC and The National. Neither account specified the number of bankers added, so the growth rate does not establish an absolute headcount.
The team is led by Selim Elgen, UAE market head and senior executive officer, and Karim Rekik, regional head for the Middle East. The branch is intended to bring the bank closer to clients while strengthening local capabilities.
Elgen said understanding clients’ circumstances required a team rooted in the market. Rekik described the UAE and wider Middle East as a significant and growing opportunity for the private bank and its clients.
DIFC Authority chief executive Arif Amiri said the expansion reinforced Dubai’s role as a private-wealth centre. That assessment is the financial centre’s view of the announcement, rather than an independent measure of future asset inflows.
Wealth forecast provides context
The National cited Boston Consulting Group’s forecast that UAE net wealth would reach $6 trillion by 2030, adding more than $2.3 trillion over five years at an annual growth rate of 10.6%. Those figures are a consultancy projection, not wealth already held in the country or assets managed by JPMorgan.
The report also cited Savills’ ranking of Dubai and Abu Dhabi among destinations for the next generation of wealth. The rankings describe expected preferences and longer-term trends, not new accounts or deposits secured by this branch.
The dedicated private-banking branch adds to JPMorgan’s existing activities in the financial centre. The firm has also broadened its operations through authorisation for asset-management services via J.P. Morgan International Advisors, DIFC said.
The announcement did not disclose a target for the new branch’s assets under management or revenue. Its immediate significance is the dedicated regulatory and operating platform, backed by a larger local private-banking team, rather than a reported financial result.
