An event at Pepco’s I Street Substation disrupted power in Washington’s Foggy Bottom neighbourhood Monday, affecting about 1,100 customers and forcing George Washington University to suspend much of its academic activity.

The customer count came from Pepco’s statement to WTOP, whose report was published at 12:58 p.m. The utility said crews were assessing conditions and working to restore service, but had not provided an estimated restoration time in that account.

The cause remained under investigation. WTOP reported that Pepco said shortly before 1 p.m. there was no indication of foul play.

University limits afternoon activity

George Washington University’s 12:10 p.m. campus advisory said all in-person and remote classes had been cancelled until noon. For the afternoon, the university announced different arrangements by campus and school rather than a blanket return to normal operations.

Activities at the Virginia Science and Technology campus and the Arlington and Alexandria education centres were to resume in person and online. School of Medicine and Health Sciences activity at Ross Hall was to resume in person, while GW Law would operate online only.

All other academic activities were suspended for the remainder of Monday, the advisory said. The university listed numerous Foggy Bottom buildings without power, while others, including Science and Engineering Hall, Ross Hall and several other facilities, retained service.

Dining remained available on the Mount Vernon campus, but services at Thurston Hall, District House and Shenkman Hall were unavailable in the update. The university also warned of continuing effects on GWorld, parking and network-based services.

Dark traffic signals reported

The WTOP Traffic Center reported dark signals at numerous intersections in the area. Pepco asked residents and visitors to stay away from work areas for their safety.

The outage figures and operating arrangements reflect the utility and university updates cited above, rather than a live customer-by-customer power count. Neither source provided a restoration time in those updates.

The university said its operations and safety teams were coordinating with local partners and would post further information through Campus Advisories or email. Its building-level guidance remains the direct source for students and staff checking which activities can proceed.
