L3Harris Technologies said Monday, November 2, that it has received multiple U.S. Army production orders totaling $121 million for its Low-Cost Data Radio, or LOCODA, solution. The orders support the Army’s command-and-control requirements and vehicle communications.

The company announcement gave a combined value for several orders. It did not disclose the value of each order, the number of radios involved or a delivery schedule. The $121 million should not be read as a newly announced overall contract ceiling.

Chris Aebli, president of L3Harris’ Communications & Spectrum Dominance business, said LOCODA uses existing installation kits to field an upgraded vehicle-communications capability. The company said the approach is intended to give commanders access to Army command-and-control applications through multiple communications options on a single platform.

L3Harris said the system will support narrowband and wideband waveforms, anti-jam capabilities, low-probability-of-intercept and low-probability-of-detection waveforms, mobile ad hoc networking and Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems.

Those are the supplier’s descriptions of the system’s planned capabilities. The announcement did not provide independent performance testing or quantify the time and cost savings Aebli said the use of existing kits could offer.

The production orders add to L3Harris’ work supplying data and voice communications for the Army. The release did not name individual recipient units or provide a fielding timetable, so the order announcement does not establish when any particular unit will receive the equipment.
