David Breuer-Weil, a leading figure in the United Kingdom’s contemporary art scene, is in Israel this week for the opening of his first solo exhibition in the country.

The landmark event arrives at a significant moment for the London-born creator, who, according to a press release, was recently selected to design a major memorial in the UK commemorating the events of October 7, the details of which have not yet been revealed.

His upcoming Tel Aviv showcase brings together a profound body of work addressing the tragedy of the massacre, the emotional return of the hostages, and complex questions surrounding Jewish identity and belonging.

British Ambassador to Israel expected to attend exhibition’s opening night

The exhibition, aptly titled Unity, is scheduled to open on November 4 at the Sheetrit & Wolf Gallery in Tel Aviv’s historic Neve Tzedek neighborhood. British Ambassador to Israel Simon Walters is slated to attend the opening night, which spotlights human connections and the collective yearning for solidarity during profound times of crisis.

The curation features an array of new paintings and sculptures that directly engage with the global events impacting Israel and Jewish communities worldwide.

A defining centerpiece of the exhibition is a poignant new series of paintings and sculptures titled Home, which Breuer-Weil conceptualized and created following the initial return of Israeli hostages. Reflecting on the intense personal and artistic weight of the project, the artist expressed that he had never encountered a theme that felt more vital for him to sculpt, paint, and draw.

Visitors will also encounter Morning, a monumental canvas addressing the October 7 attacks by weaving together hundreds of intricate images and symbols in a deliberate effort to preserve historical memory.

Another pivotal piece on display, Where Shall I Go? (Ana Elech), shifts the lens to the contemporary realities of British Jewry, exploring the future of the community against a backdrop of rising insecurity and antisemitism in the UK.

Breuer-Weil’s extensive artistic portfolio

Born in London in 1965, Breuer-Weil formalized his artistic training at Central Saint Martins and the University of Cambridge. He has earned international renown for his large-scale paintings and monumental public sculptures, several of which occupy prominent public spaces across London and globally.

His work has been featured in dedicated exhibitions hosted by premier auction houses Sotheby’s and Christie’s, and his pieces are held extensively in both public institutional and private collections.

To provide further depth into the artist’s creative universe, the gallery will host special screenings of The King of Nerac, a documentary film that explores Breuer-Weil’s life, philosophy, and extensive body of work.

Curated by Gregory Baker, Unity will be open to the public until December 4 at the Sheetrit & Wolf Gallery, located at 35-37 Shabazi Street. The gallery welcomes visitors Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
