Election Day arrived Tuesday, November 3, after millions of Americans cast early ballots, with federal monitors and voting-rights groups preparing to watch polling places closely as voters decide control of Congress, The Associated Press reported.

Early voting was on pace to surpass the previous midterm election, and voting had unfolded with relatively few problems ahead of Tuesday, according to AP. The report comes as President Donald Trump continues to question whether he will accept the outcome if Republicans lose.

The Justice Department planned its largest-ever Election Day polling-place monitoring effort, AP reported, while Democrats and allied groups organized an even larger effort. The administration has said armed federal officials would not be guarding the polls.

Legal disputes over election administration continued into the final hours before Election Day. On Monday night, the Supreme Court rejected the administration’s request to make California set aside thousands of ballots as part of its search for noncitizen voters, according to AP.

The report said election-related court battles could continue beyond Tuesday into ballot counting and certification. It also noted that research and state investigations have found instances of noncitizens casting ballots to be extremely rare.
