Democrat Xavier Becerra defeated Republican Steve Hilton in California’s governor race, NBC News reported.
Becerra would succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, keeping the governor’s office in Democratic hands.
Becerra previously served in the California Assembly and Congress before becoming California attorney general. He later led the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden, NBC News reported.
The outcome is a media race call, not election certification.
