Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville is projected to defeat Democrat Doug Jones in Alabama’s race for governor, succeeding term-limited Republican Gov. Kay Ivey and keeping the office in Republican hands.
The Fox News Decision Desk projected Tuberville’s victory. The Associated Press, NBC News and CBS News had not called the race, and Jones had not conceded, the Alabama Reflector reported. Tuberville declared victory Tuesday night.
The race was a rematch of the 2020 U.S. Senate election, when Tuberville defeated Jones, then the incumbent senator. Jones, a former federal prosecutor, was seeking to become the first Democrat elected governor of Alabama in nearly three decades. Tuberville, a longtime college football coach before entering politics, spent a decade as head coach at Auburn University.
The result is a media race call, not election certification.
