President Trump said Wednesday that he can work with Democrats on financial issues after their midterm election sweep, striking a conciliatory tone a day after his party lost control of Congress.
“I can work with them on many things, many more things than people understand,” Trump said in a brief phone call with CNBC’s Eamon Javers on Wednesday afternoon.
Asked about a possible cap on credit card interest rates, an idea floated as one where the left and right could come together, Trump declined to comment. He did say he would not want tariffs removed, noting that he and Sen. Bernie Sanders were “exactly the same” on trade, and said he could work with Democrats on financial items he views as mutually beneficial.
Trump did not name specific proposals he would support, and no negotiations have been announced. The comments signal a president ready to deal as Washington adjusts to divided government: Democrats won majorities in both the House and Senate in Tuesday’s midterms, and Wall Street rallied sharply on the result Wednesday.
For voters watching their credit card bills and grocery costs, the takeaway is that both sides are at least talking about pocketbook issues, even if nothing is on the table yet.
