New Jersey rail commuters face gaps in Friday service after a Newark drawbridge malfunction disrupted trains Thursday evening, leaving crews and equipment out of position.

NJ Transit says trains will not run between Dover and Hackettstown on the Morris and Essex Lines, or between MSU Station and Hackettstown on the Montclair-Boonton Line, on Friday, November 6.

The rest of those lines, along with the Gladstone Branch, will operate on a weekday schedule, according to the agency’s Friday service alert. Riders should allow extra travel time and check the latest notice before leaving.

Check your stretch of the line before heading out

For commuters who normally board between Dover and Hackettstown, or between MSU Station and Hackettstown, the alert changes the first step of the trip: they need to check available alternatives before going to their usual station.

A Thursday bridge problem carries into Friday

The Newark Drawbridge became stuck open around 4 p.m. Thursday. Service was suspended in both directions between Newark Broad Street and Hoboken on the Morris and Essex Lines, Gladstone Branch and Montclair-Boonton Line.

Limited service resumed with delays just before 9:30 p.m. NJ Transit attributed Friday’s gaps to the lingering effects on crew and equipment.

The agency’s latest alert is the starting point for a Friday travel check. Service conditions can change as crews and equipment return to place.
