AI21 Labs has shifted its focus to training and optimizing AI agents for enterprise customers after cutting about 110 of its roughly 180 employees in May, founders Ori Goshen and Yoav Shoham said in an interview with Globes published Friday. About 70 employees remain.
The founders denied reports that the company raised $300 million shortly before the layoffs, and denied that it had sought a sale to Nvidia, which endorsed the company last month.
Goshen and Shoham declined to comment on reports of acquisition talks with Nebius, confirming only a commercial partnership with the company.
Co-founder Amnon Shashua left AI21 in June, a month after the layoffs.
The founders said the company’s approach lowers the cost of running AI agents and improves their performance, claims that are the company’s own.
