If current events have you looking for news that’s just plain fluff, here’s some: NYC is getting a bunny cafe. Similar to the familiar cat cafe idea, The Carrot Cup Cafe at 354 Pleasant Avenue in East Harlem is a community space where you can enjoy coffee and other artisanal refreshments while learning about rabbit care (there really is a lot to learn!), adopt a new friend, purchase treats for small critters, and, of course, get some bunny cuddles in. The cafe is an extension of Bunnies & Beyond, a rabbit rescue founded in 2016 by Cindy Stutts; the grand opening will be Sunday, September 27, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
In addition to being a rabbit and guinea pig adoption center, Carrot Cup, staffed by volunteers, will be a chance for prospective owners to learn more about their needs. The cafe will be open daily after Sunday’s event. Come for the coffee, stay for the bunnies (and guinea pigs).
In the works are Q&As with medical and behavior professionals, speed-dating, birthday parties, bunny yoga, and more. Future plans include a low-cost clinic.
Cindy and her volunteers at the non-profit organization Bunnies & Beyond have cared for stray and unwanted rabbits for over 25 years. The organization is dedicated to promoting the adoption of rabbits and guinea pigs while providing education to make sure they receive proper care.
They also find medical care for animals that have been abandoned or surrendered and provide rabbit bonding services (yes, bunny speed dating), because pet rabbits often thrive better with a buddy.
