Amazon shoppers invited to a new service can now text Alexa to compare products, build a cart and buy without opening the shopping app. The rollout began Friday with a small group of U.S. customers who get an invitation by text, and Amazon said access will expand over the coming weeks.

If you have not received an invitation, you do not have it yet. Amazon said customers can sign up on a landing page to hear when more invites go out.

How it works

Invited customers accept the terms, link a phone number and start texting. The contact shows up on the phone as “Alexa Shopping.” Amazon said customers can text things like a weekly grocery order, a birthday gift search, or a photo of an outfit to find similar items.

The service can also compare products, show up to a year of price history, send an alert when a price drops, and give order updates. A reorder request is bought with the customer’s approval, Amazon said.

One conversation across devices

Amazon said a request started by text can carry over to the Alexa shopping tool in the Amazon app, on the website and on Alexa devices, and the other way around. The company said Alexa for Shopping will remember what you were working on and what you prefer.

In plain words: this is a way to shop by sending a text message, and for now only people Amazon invites can use it.
