Institutional investors preparing to buy shares in Anthropic’s planned initial public offering are pressing for a valuation of roughly $1.5 trillion to $1.6 trillion, below figures approaching $2 trillion discussed in recent months, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The Journal cited people familiar with the matter as saying investors had conveyed that view to the Claude developer and its advisers over the preceding several days. The reported range represents investor feedback, not a final valuation, an announced offering price or a completed transaction.

The push for a more cautious valuation followed a selloff in technology shares, the Journal reported. Its account described institutional buyers weighing the IPO amid renewed concern about technology-stock prices.

Offering terms remain preliminary

Anthropic’s amended SEC registration filing leaves the offering price and number of shares blank. No final price or offering size has been set in that filing. A valuation is the implied worth of the company, not the amount of money it would raise by selling shares.

The company has applied to list its Class A shares on Nasdaq under the symbol ANT. A preliminary registration does not establish that the offering has been completed, and the proposed terms can change.

The valuation discussion is a separate development from the financial results in the amended filing, covered in JBizNews’ earlier earnings report. That filing showed sharply higher revenue alongside a return to an operating loss as computing costs increased.

The Journal’s account does not establish that Anthropic has accepted the investors’ preferred range or that every prospective buyer shares it. The final terms will depend on the offering process and any subsequent company disclosures.
