Apple announced a new 14-inch MacBook Pro with its M6 processor Tuesday, setting a $1,999 U.S. starting price and a November 6 arrival date for a laptop aimed at business users, developers and creative professionals.
Preorders open October 28, Apple said in its October 27 announcement. The computer comes in space black and silver, with education pricing starting at $1,899. Those dates distinguish the product announcement from when customers can order and when the machines are expected to reach them.
The M6 configuration combines a 12-core central processor and a 12-core graphics processor, each with two more cores than the previous version described by Apple. It starts with 16 gigabytes of unified memory and can be configured with up to 32 gigabytes. Unified memory is a shared pool used by the computer’s processors, rather than separate memory reserved for each.
Faster local work, with company benchmarks
Apple says graphics performance is up to 30% faster than on the M5 version and certain on-device AI workloads are up to 25% faster. Those are Apple’s claims based on selected tests, not independent measurements of how much faster every application will run.
The practical distinction for a business is the task being performed. Compiling software, processing images and rendering a three-dimensional project place different demands on a computer. A benchmark improvement in one workload does not guarantee the same time saving in a spreadsheet, a video call or another everyday application.
Apple is also emphasizing the ability to run AI models locally. That means some processing can happen on the laptop instead of requiring a remote server for every task. The announcement describes additional accelerators within the graphics processor and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, hardware designed for AI-related calculations. Whether a particular business tool uses that hardware depends on the software, not simply on buying the new laptop.
Connections and battery life
The new model adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 and supports up to two external displays, according to Apple. Its ports include HDMI, MagSafe 3 charging, three Thunderbolt 4 connections, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack. That matters for offices and creators with existing monitors, storage devices and camera workflows.
Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours. That is a maximum claim, not a promise of a full day of heavy computing on a charge. The company also says the laptop can reach up to 50% charge in 30 minutes with a compatible higher-wattage USB-C power adapter, such as its 96-watt model.
The laptop retains a Liquid Retina XDR display with an optional nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare, a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera and a six-speaker sound system. Apple says it runs macOS 27, which includes its Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features.
For companies considering a replacement cycle, Tuesday’s announcement fixes the starting price, ordering window and hardware specifications. The value of replacing an existing machine still depends on its age, the software employees use and whether their work benefits from the faster processor or newer connections. Initial customer deliveries and store availability begin November 6.
