The city of Bangkok has been declared a disaster zone as heavy monsoon rains continue pummeling the Thai capital and flooding streets, according to the Bangkok Post on Saturday.
The rainfall began on Thursday and is expected to keep pouring through Sunday, Thailand’s meteorological department warned.
People were advised to beware of flash floods, overflows, and landslides, especially along canals and lowlands.
All ships and small boats were also instructed to proceed with caution as strong winds accompanying the rain may cause waves over three meters high in some areas off Thailand’s coast.
Bangkok governor urges public not to panic as authorities prepare for disaster response
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who signed the disaster zone order, stated that the flood water could take two to three days to drain once the rain stops and urged the public not to panic, according to the Bangkok Post.
Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation advised emergency personnel in areas prone to flooding to gather personnel, food, drinking water, essential supplies, and temporary shelters as authorities prepare to respond to the flooding.
