Bitcoin slipped back below $80,000 Thursday morning, giving back part of Wednesday’s post-election rebound. Coinbase’s spot snapshot showed $78,674.05 at about 9:54 a.m. Eastern on November 5. That is a point-in-time price, not a closing result or a verified 24-hour return.

The retreat follows a volatile stretch in which bitcoin recovered above $80,000 after an election-night drop. Our Wednesday report recorded the earlier rebound. The latest quote shows that crossing a round-number threshold does not mean the price will hold there.

What holders should watch

For someone who owns bitcoin, the immediate effect is a lower dollar value than when it traded above $80,000. The effect on a particular account depends on when it was bought, the amount held and trading fees. A single price quote does not identify why the market moved.

Spot bitcoin, bitcoin futures, shares of bitcoin-holding companies and mining stocks are different investments. They can move by different amounts, so a miner’s earnings or AI-data-center announcement should not be treated as a direct reading of bitcoin’s return.

For businesses accepting cryptocurrency, the practical issue is the value between receiving a payment and converting it to dollars. A payment processor’s conversion terms and fees matter alongside the headline price. Thursday’s pullback is a reminder that yesterday’s rally is not a guaranteed cash value today.
