A Citi employee was killed in a shooting at the bank’s Tampa, Florida office Wednesday, Chief Executive Jane Fraser told staff. The suspect is also dead, according to local authorities, CNBC reported, citing Reuters.
An armed security guard employed by Citibank stopped the attacker during an exchange of gunfire inside a cafeteria, Fox News reported, citing Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Frank Losat. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he died, the report said.
Four other people were treated at a local hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, Fox News reported. The report did not establish how they were injured.
Fraser said the Tampa campus is secure. The bank is adding security at other locations where necessary as it works with local law enforcement.
“The Tampa campus is secure, and we are adding additional security to all of our other sites as necessary,” Fraser said in a memo to employees, according to the report.
The chief executive said Citi was still learning the details of what happened. The report did not identify the employee or the suspect.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said earlier Wednesday that “the suspect involved in the Citibank Active Threat scene is deceased.” He said 365 deputies had responded and that he believed the incident was targeted, CNBC reported.
The sheriff’s assessment does not establish a motive. The report did not provide one, or explain the suspect’s relationship to the employee.
