Anthropic’s Claude chatbot can now look at your bank and card accounts and answer questions about your money in plain English. It is a test version, and it is rolling out this week to US customers on the paid Pro, Max and Ultra plans.
What it does
- Shows your balances, your spending and your bills in one place.
- Answers questions like “Where did my money go this month?” or “What’s left before payday?”
- Points out charges that hit twice, surprise fees and bills that crept up over the year.
- Explains money terms, such as what an APR is.
What it can’t do
- It is read-only. It cannot move your money, pay a bill or invest for you.
- It is not designed to give investment advice.
- It can get things wrong. Anthropic says to ask which transactions are behind a number and to check important figures with your bank.
How your accounts get connected
Nothing connects unless you choose it. You sign in to your bank yourself through Plaid, a service that links apps to banks, and approve read-only access. Anthropic says Claude never asks for or sees your bank password.
For the accounts you pick, Claude sees the bank name, account name, type and last four digits, balances, credit limits and up to two years of transactions. Anthropic says chats in the Personal Finance section are not used to train its models. Chats you have elsewhere in Claude follow your regular privacy settings. You can unlink an account any time.
What it means for your wallet
If you already check several banking apps to see where your money goes, this puts it in one chat. The most useful part may be the catch-all question: “Does anything look off?” A double charge or a bill that quietly went up is easy to miss on your own.
Before you connect anything, think about what you are comfortable sharing, and keep your bank’s own app as the final word on your balance.
Anthropic says it is exploring ways for Claude to work alongside licensed professionals and regulated financial firms on bigger money decisions.
