A suburban Denver police officer was killed and three others were wounded in a firefight on a public transit bus Thursday evening that ended with officers fatally shooting the gunman, authorities said. A bystander was also injured.
Lakewood officers had responded to a call about a suspicious person trying to board a Regional Transportation District bus, police spokesperson John Romero said at a news conference, according to the Associated Press. The person may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier in the day, he said.
The man opened fire when officers boarded the bus, and they returned fire, killing him, Romero said.
Authorities have not released the names of the officers or the gunman, and they have not described a motive. The conditions of the wounded officers and the bystander were not immediately disclosed.
Lakewood is a suburb west of Denver. The shooting prompted a large police response around the West Colfax Avenue corridor Thursday evening.
