Governments and health leaders are due to meet Monday in Antigua and Barbuda for the first Global Summit for Eye Health, with avoidable sight loss and its economic costs on the agenda.
The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. local time, or noon to 5:30 p.m. Eastern, at the John E St Luce Finance and Conference Centre. It takes place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth leaders’ meeting, which runs November 1-4 in St John’s.
According to the Commonwealth’s event notice, the governments of Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Guyana and Nigeria are hosting the meeting in technical collaboration with the World Health Organization and in partnership with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.
Organizers say one billion people live with avoidable sight loss. They plan to bring together government officials, public- and private-sector leaders, charities and funding institutions to consider how better access to eye care can improve daily life and economic opportunity.
The summit’s organizers say the aim is to secure national commitments on policy, plans and financing for eye health. Those are goals for the meeting, not announced results or funding pledges.
The event is being held five years after the United Nations resolution on vision. It is a separate summit taking place alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, rather than a session of the leaders’ meeting itself.
