The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its interest-rate decision at 2 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, followed by a press conference at 2:30 p.m., giving households, businesses and investors two separate points to watch for changes in monetary policy.

The Fed’s October calendar lists the October 27-28 meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee and both afternoon events. The announcement is the decision itself. The press conference that follows gives the public a chance to hear the reasoning behind it.

What to check at 2 p.m.

The first question is the target range for the federal funds rate. Just as important is what the committee says about economic activity, employment, inflation and the risks it is watching. The wording can matter even when the target range does not change.

The Fed’s meeting calendar does not designate October as a meeting with a Summary of Economic Projections. Readers should not expect the regular package of policymakers’ forecasts that accompanies the meetings marked with an asterisk on that calendar.

Why the press conference matters

The 2:30 p.m. event follows the written announcement. Any account of what officials say must wait for the event itself; the calendar does not establish whether policy will change or what the next meeting will bring.

For borrowers and business owners, the distinction between the policy decision and its effects is important. The federal funds rate is an overnight interbank rate, not a mortgage or small-business loan offer. The Fed explains that its policy influences other interest rates and broader financial conditions, but those effects are not direct or immediate.

The practical reading order is the decision, the explanation and then the effects on actual financing terms. A scheduled announcement is not a promise of lower borrowing costs, and no result is known in advance.
