Democrat Helena Foulkes has won Rhode Island’s race for governor, the Associated Press reports. The result keeps the governor’s office in Democratic hands. Read the AP race call via WTOP.

The outcome keeps the governor’s office in Democratic hands. Foulkes defeated incumbent Gov. Dan McKee in the Democratic primary before advancing to Tuesday’s general election, according to Ocean State Media.

Foulkes campaigned on addressing housing costs and affordability and on challenging the Trump administration. The local public-media outlet reported that she would become Rhode Island’s second woman governor, following Gina Raimondo.

Block gained support during the general-election campaign after the September primary. Foulkes ran ads criticizing his past remarks about the Affordable Care Act; Block said the ads misrepresented his current support for broader health care access, the report said.

The AP race call is not a certified election result. This report includes no vote totals or margin, and the governor’s race does not determine control of either chamber of Congress.
