Google has quietly expanded voluntary buyout offers to employees in five countries, Reuters reported Wednesday, even as the company’s overall headcount climbs to record levels on hiring and its acquisition of Israeli cybersecurity firm Wiz.
The company confirmed to Reuters that it began offering voluntary exit packages in June to some employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The offers had not been previously reported, and it is not known how many employees have accepted them.

“In 2025, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance,” a Google spokesperson said. “This past summer, in June, we expanded this program globally in a few countries to support our important work ahead.”
The offers are not a mass layoff, and Google’s workforce is not shrinking. The company ended September with 204,757 employees, up roughly 10,000 in six months – growth driven by hiring and the Wiz acquisition, according to its third-quarter results. The buyouts instead target selected divisions as Google shifts resources toward artificial intelligence and cloud computing, its stated priorities.
The pattern is familiar inside the company. Google ran voluntary exit programs in parts of its U.S. and British operations last year, and in at least one division a voluntary program was followed by a round of involuntary layoffs. Employees in Google Cloud and the DeepMind AI research unit were excluded from earlier offers, and the latest expansion appears to follow the same approach.
Google is not alone. Microsoft last week offered voluntary buyouts to 60,000 employees as it works to contain costs.
What it means: for Google staff in the five countries, a voluntary package is the gentlest form of exit – but the company’s own history suggests that where buyouts do not thin the ranks enough, layoffs can follow. For the industry, it is one more sign that even record headcounts now come with constant quiet pruning around the edges.
