Democrat Hannah Pingree won Maine’s governor election, defeating Republican Bobby Charles and independent Rick Bennett, according to Fox News.
Maine Public reported that The Associated Press called the race just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Pingree will succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Janet Mills.
A former state House speaker who later worked in the Mills administration, Pingree made housing, property taxes and health care costs central to her campaign. Charles campaigned on the cost of living and his criticism of the current administration. Bennett, a former Republican state lawmaker, ran as an independent.
The result keeps the governor’s office in Democratic hands. Media race calls are not election certification.
Maine Public reported that both Bobby Charles and Rick Bennett called Pingree to concede.
