Communities that voted to restrict data centers can keep those limits, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Friday, while arguing planned AI construction elsewhere in the country can continue.

Data centers are the large buildings full of computers that run AI. How fast they get built can affect AI companies, local electricity bills and jobs in the towns where they are planned.

What Hassett said

Hassett, the director of the National Economic Council, said: “We respect the localities that decide that’s what they want to do. But America is a big place, and right now, the data centers scheduled over the next couple of years aren’t affected by these ballot initiatives.”

He added that there is “plenty of room in the U.S. for data center growth to continue, as it was projected ahead of the election.” He also said local communities should decide whether to welcome development.
