Democrat Jocelyn Benson is projected to defeat Republican Rep. John James in Michigan’s race for governor, keeping the office in Democratic hands.

The Fox News Decision Desk called the race for Benson at 1:14 a.m. ET. The Associated Press, NBC News and CBS News had not called the race, and James had not conceded. Decision Desk HQ had projected Benson as the winner at 10:45 p.m. ET.

Benson, Michigan’s secretary of state since 2019, succeeds term-limited Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. James, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, won the Republican nomination earlier this year.

The result is a media race call, not election certification.
