Democrat Joey Cohen-Saban is projected to defeat Republican incumbent Michael Novakhov in Brooklyn’s 45th Assembly District, flipping the seat to Democratic control.

Brooklyn Paper and City & State reported Cohen-Saban’s victory based on unofficial New York City Board of Elections results.

The district includes parts of Midwood, Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Gravesend and Brighton Beach.

For families in these neighborhoods, the result means a new representative in Albany on issues including state school funding and neighborhood services.

A campaign focused on local concerns

Cohen-Saban is chief of staff to state Sen. Sam Sutton and a Brooklyn Democratic district leader, according to his campaign website.

His campaign emphasized fighting antisemitism, public safety and funding for schools and yeshivas. These were campaign priorities, not promises of funding already approved.

According to Brooklyn Paper, Cohen-Saban focused on outreach to the district’s Orthodox and Sephardic Jewish communities. The race was a rematch after Novakhov defeated him in 2024.

City & State reported that Cohen-Saban told supporters at his election-night gathering in Midwood that he intended to represent the whole district, including people who did not vote for him.
