Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., plans to run for Senate minority leader in the next Congress, Fox News Digital reported, citing a source close to him.
The reported intention is not a leadership vote or an announcement that Thune has been selected for the post. Republicans lost their Senate majority in Tuesday’s midterm elections, making the conference’s top post the minority leadership.
Thune defended his conference’s record after the defeat, writing on social media that Republicans had “put up a strong record of accomplishment that’s created safer streets, more money in Americans’ pockets, and new opportunities for families and businesses to get ahead.”
