Midterm Election-Night TV Audience Tops 31 Million, Up 23% From 2022

More than 31 million people watched U.S. midterm election coverage in primetime across 13 live television news networks, up 23% from the 2022 midterms but down 14% from 2018, according to Nielsen data reported by Axios.

The figures measure television audiences, not votes or voter turnout. They provide a snapshot of the competition for viewers among broadcast and cable news outlets on a major live-news night.

NBC led total viewers; cable rankings differed by measure

Per Nielsen data reported by Axios, NBC News drew about 6.7 million total primetime viewers, Fox News about 4.3 million and CNN about 4.1 million. NBC led the overall total-viewer ranking, while Fox News led its main cable competitors in total viewers, the report said.

A business measure of a divided audience

The totals matter to the advertising business as a measure of the reach of live news programming. The figures cited here are audience measurements, not an announcement of advertising revenue, prices or profit.

The coverage was spread across multiple broadcast and cable channels. The figures should therefore be read as a multi-network television picture rather than one channel’s audience.

What the count includes and leaves out

The Nielsen data include viewing in out-of-home locations such as bars and restaurants, Axios reported. The data do not capture the full audience for independent creators’ social-media videos and online livestreams.

Axios noted that the measurement can include major networks’ live linear programming watched on connected televisions. It should not be described as a tally of all streaming or social views. A social-video view and a television viewer are not interchangeable measures.

The comparison with earlier midterms also points in two directions: the television total was higher than in 2022 and lower than in 2018, according to the Nielsen data reported by Axios. The measurements alone do not establish why people watched or chose a particular network.
