Northern Regional Hospital joined Novant Health’s network on Monday, November 2, bringing the 133-bed Mount Airy, North Carolina, medical center and approximately 1,000 employees into the regional health system. The hospital is now called Novant Health Northern Regional Medical Center.

The announcement from Novant Health marks the hospital’s entry into the network, rather than simply a plan for a future affiliation. For patients in Surry County and the surrounding area, Novant said the existing physicians and clinics will continue providing care, with no changes planned to services currently available locally.

The hospital opened in 1957 and now provides advanced imaging, laboratory, cardiology, maternity, orthopedic, surgical, skilled nursing and emergency services. Those existing operations form the base for an expansion effort that Novant says it is developing, although Monday’s announcement did not identify specific new facilities, opening dates or a timetable for additional services.

Alisha Hutchens, senior vice president and president of Novant Health’s Triad Region, described Northern Regional as the community’s hospital and said the combined organization intends to expand access to primary, specialty and hospital-based care. Those are forward-looking plans, not newly opened services announced Monday.

Novant’s announcement did not disclose a purchase price or a detailed investment schedule. The immediate change it described was the hospital and its workforce joining the care network under the new name, while patients continue using the physicians, clinics and services they already know.

Novant Health says its wider network spans more than 900 locations, including 22 hospitals and nearly 800 physician clinics and urgent care centers, along with outpatient, imaging and pharmacy services. It operates across North Carolina and South Carolina. The Mount Airy addition extends that network’s presence in northwest North Carolina, with the scope and timing of local service expansion still to be set out.
