Democrat Richard Pan is projected to win election to the U.S. House in California’s 6th Congressional District, according to The Associated Press, CBS News and NBC News.

Pan defeated Rep. Kevin Kiley, a Republican-turned-independent who still caucuses with Republicans. Kiley currently represents the 3rd District and ran in the 6th after redistricting changed the boundaries, CBS reported.

Pan is a doctor and former California state senator. AP declared him the winner at 2 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday.

A media race call is not official election certification.
