Salesforce has agreed to acquire Rune Technologies, a defense logistics technology company whose software is already deployed with the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, expanding its push to connect military headquarters systems with frontline operations.

The companies announced a definitive agreement Thursday. Salesforce did not disclose a purchase price in its October 29 announcement. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce’s fiscal year 2027, subject to customary closing conditions. It is an agreement to buy the company, not a completed acquisition.

The planned deal gives Salesforce technology designed for a difficult operating problem: helping military teams decide what supplies, equipment and transport they need when reliable network access is unavailable. That differs from an office deployment in which users can assume a continuing connection to a central system.

Logistics beyond the last reliable network

Salesforce says Rune combines information from enterprise systems with live operational data to forecast demand and resupply needs, recommend resource allocation and transportation routes, and evaluate logistics plans. Those capabilities are intended for denied, degraded, intermittent or limited-connectivity environments, often abbreviated DDIL.

The company’s stated approach is to keep operational work functioning when connections drop and synchronize information when service returns. Salesforce plans to bring that technology into Missionforce, its government and defense portfolio, linking frontline supply decisions with maintenance, personnel, procurement and other enterprise workflows.

Those are the company’s descriptions of the software and its intended integration, not an independent assessment of battlefield performance. The announcement does not set out a separate public schedule for completing the product integration after the acquisition closes.

Army and Marine Corps deployment

Rune’s technology is already deployed with the Army and Marine Corps, according to Salesforce. Co-founders David Tuttle and Peter Goldsborough launched Rune in 2024, with experience at defense technology company Anduril. Salesforce describes the team as including military veterans and senior technologists.

For Rune, joining Salesforce would connect its frontline logistics tools with a larger enterprise software platform and government customer base. For Salesforce, the acquisition would add a specialized defense technology business rather than simply another general-purpose customer-management feature.

Salesforce called the proposed transaction its most significant national security-focused acquisition. That description reflects the company’s strategic assessment; it should not be read as a ranking by deal value when the price has not been disclosed.

The $5.6 billion figure is not the purchase price

The announcement also points to a previously announced 10-year U.S. Army contract with a $5.6 billion ceiling as evidence of Missionforce’s broader defense business. That figure is a contract ceiling, not the amount Salesforce is paying for Rune, and it should not be described as guaranteed revenue.

Salesforce says its defense business is growing 80% year over year and serves customers across all six branches of the U.S. military. Those growth and customer claims are attributed to the company; the acquisition announcement does not provide a separate defense-business financial statement.

The next transaction milestone is closing, which remains subject to the conditions identified by Salesforce. Until then, Rune’s planned addition to Missionforce remains a proposed combination, with the purchase price undisclosed.
