Fewer people are buying tablets. Global tablet shipments fell 23% from a year earlier to 32 million units in the third quarter, the lowest level in nearly three years, research firm Omdia reported. Shipments are devices sent to stores and partners, not sales to shoppers.

Apple kept its lead even though its shipments fell 28%, and its market share slipped to 36% from 38.2% a year earlier. Samsung shipped 5.4 million tablets, down 22%, for a 16.9% share. Lenovo was the only top-five vendor to grow, with shipments up 12% to 4.1 million units, lifting its share to 12.7% from 8.7%. Xiaomi shipped 2.3 million tablets, down 11%, and Huawei fell 43% to 1.8 million, the steepest drop among the top five.

Omdia blamed tighter supply of parts and weak demand, saying recent launches have done little to get shoppers excited because new models are not different enough from the old ones. The firm’s analysts forecast that a meaningful recovery is unlikely before 2028.

In plain terms: people are holding on to their old tablets longer, and with parts scarce, the companies making them are focusing on other products first.
