Tesla Energy says its Smart Charging feature can now coordinate home charging for electric vehicles from other brands when used with a Powerwall battery and Wall Connector charger.
For households that own Tesla’s home-energy equipment but drive another brand’s EV, the feature offers a way to time charging around solar generation and electricity rates. It requires the Powerwall-and-Wall-Connector setup Tesla named, rather than the Tesla app alone.
In a November 6 announcement, Tesla Energy said Smart Charging considers a home’s solar production, energy goals and driving needs, then automatically chooses charging times. The company described it as “now compatible with any EV” and part of Tesla Home in the app.
Tesla described two charging options. Savings Mode enables Low-Cost Charging, which takes account of solar production and utility rates. Self-Powered Mode enables Charge on Solar, which sends surplus solar energy to the vehicle instead of exporting it to the grid.
The feature is part of Tesla’s wider home-energy controls. On its Tesla Home page, the company says its software plans energy use around household demand, solar output and local electricity prices.
