Democrat Troy Jackson defeated Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine’s U.S. Senate election after Collins conceded the race Tuesday night and called Jackson to congratulate him.

The Associated Press reported Collins’ concession, which ends her run for a sixth term after first winning election to the Senate in 1996. Maine Public and Fox News also reported the concession.

The result flips a Republican-held seat.

Jackson is a fifth-generation logger from northern Maine and a former president of the Maine Senate. He represented parts of Aroostook County in the state Legislature.

Vote counting continues. A media race call is not official election certification.
