President Donald Trump said Tuesday night that he was willing to accept the midterm election results and work with Democrats, according to a phone interview with The New York Times.

Trump said he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results, the newspaper reported. “We’ll, you know, look forward to working with them,” he said. “We’ll probably work something out.”

Reuters also reported the remarks, quoting Trump as saying: “We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out.”

The Times said Trump spoke shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday while watching election returns at the White House. He blamed Republican losses on his absence from the ballot and said he had no regrets about his candidate endorsements, according to the interview.

The comments came as Democrats gained seats in the midterms. NBC News and CBS News have since called Democratic control of both the House and the Senate, setting up a change in congressional leadership in January.

Trump’s remarks expressed a willingness to cooperate; the interview did not announce a policy agreement with Democratic leaders.
