President Donald Trump warned Sunday that the United States might eventually have to use further force against Iran, telling a campaign rally in Dubuque, Iowa, that “at some point we’re going to have to give them the hammer.” He did not announce a strike or set a date for military action.

Speaking Sunday afternoon, two days before the midterm elections, Trump said he wanted to avoid more deaths. “I want to try and save all those lives if I can,” he told supporters, according to the transcript of his rally remarks.

He then said: “But at some point we’re going to have to give them the hammer.” The remark was a warning about possible future action, not an order for a new attack.

Trump’s comments followed his earlier statement that the Iran conflict would end “very soon,” either through an agreement or further action. That earlier statement also did not give a deadline for a deal.

The latest warning came as negotiations remained part of the public discussion. JBizNews reported earlier on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging Trump to attack Iran while Washington pursued further talks.

At the Dubuque rally, Trump also linked the war’s end to lower fuel prices. “When that war’s over, it’s gonna come plunging,” he said during a discussion of oil costs. That was his prediction, not a confirmed change in pump prices.

The rally remarks did not identify targets, describe a new military plan or say that negotiations had ended. They left open the possibility of further force without announcing that it had been ordered.
