New claims for U.S. unemployment benefits fell last week and stayed near historically low levels, the Labor Department said Thursday.
Initial claims dropped by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 189,000 in the week ended October 31, the department said. Economists had forecast about 196,000. The previous week’s figure was revised up slightly, to 195,000 from 194,000.
The four-week average of new claims, which smooths out weekly swings, fell by 2,250 to 194,750.
Continuing claims – the number of Americans still receiving benefits – rose by 23,000 to 1.718 million in the week ended October 24, the department said.
The data keep pointing to a job market where layoffs remain low even as hiring has slowed. October’s monthly jobs report is due Friday.
